As many people as you will come by in your life time, nobody will ever be like your family, which can be a great thing or a bad thing. The hard thing about people who mean so much to you is that things they do or say can hurt more, really we learn to ether let go or move past and hope for the best. I have always had a supportive family with the usual ups and downs, but it took me til now to realize the real family is the ones you choose to include in your life. In my opinion the phrase "Blood is thicker than water" isn't as black and white as people make it sound, lots of things can be thicker than blood and blood can also be thin. Do what makes you happy and keep the people in your life who also want you happy. Life is a gift we live everyday and should spend it doing what makes us happy with whom ever makes us happy.
